Signs you need a central heating system and what to do next

How to tell when your central heating needs attention

Central heating problems are rarely subtle. In Eastbourne and across Sussex, old boilers, corroded radiators and blocked pipes show up quickly once colder weather arrives. Spotting the signs early keeps homes warm, avoids cold showers and prevents more expensive breakdowns later.

Below are the most common, reliable signs that a heating system needs repair or replacement, and clear next steps you can take.

1. Cold spots on radiators or uneven heating

If radiators are cold at the bottom and warm at the top, or rooms remain colder than others despite the thermostat being set, the system is not circulating properly. Causes include trapped air, sludge build up, failing circulation pump or an incorrectly sized boiler.

What to do next:

  • Try bleeding the radiator with a bleed key. If air keeps returning, book a professional power flush.
  • If multiple radiators show cold spots, arrange a system survey. A Gas Safe engineer will check pump performance and pipework layout.

2. No hot water or frequent short hot water runs

No hot water from a combi boiler, or a cylinder that runs out quickly, points to a failing heat exchanger, thermostat fault or a cylinder problem. In properties with Megaflo or unvented cylinders, faults can be more complex and should only be handled by a qualified installer.

What to do next:

  • Check boiler pressure on the gauge. Reset the boiler following the manufacturer instructions if safe to do so.
  • If you have an unvented cylinder, contact an accredited engineer. AC Plumbing and Heating are City and Guilds trained and Gas Safe registered for Megaflo and unvented G3 work.

3. Strange noises from the boiler or radiators

Kettling, banging or gurgling sounds usually mean scale or sludge blocking the heat exchanger, or trapped air. Persistent noise often means reduced efficiency and increased risk of failure.

What to do next:

  • Arrange boiler servicing. Regular servicing keeps parts moving and identifies early wear.
  • Consider a system clean or inhibitor top up to reduce scale and corrosion.

4. Boiler keeps switching off or pressure keeps dropping

A boiler that locks out, trips or loses pressure often has a leak, faulty expansion vessel or failing valve. This is a safety issue and can leave you without heat in cold weather.

What to do next:

  • If you find visible leaks, isolate the supply and call for an emergency call out.
  • For pressure loss without visible leaks, get a diagnostic visit. AC Plumbing and Heating provide 24 hour emergency callouts across Eastbourne and neighbouring towns.

5. High running hours and poor responsiveness

An ageing boiler that takes a long time to deliver heat or cycles constantly is less efficient. Over time this increases fuel use and reduces comfort, especially in older Victorian terraces and seaside properties where heat loss is higher.

What to do next:

  • Consider a system assessment for a more efficient boiler, improved controls or underfloor heating for even warmth.
  • A full survey will identify if a boiler replacement, better insulation or upgraded controls will give the best return.

Practical checks you can do before calling an engineer

  • Check programmer and thermostat settings, and confirm the time clock is correct.
  • Check boiler pressure. Most domestic systems sit around 1 to 1.5 bar cold. Consult your boiler manual.
  • Bleed a cold radiator to remove trapped air.
  • Look for visible leaks around pipe joints, valves and the boiler base.

If any check raises concerns, or you are unsure, phone a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What a professional survey covers

A competent survey will include boiler condition and age, flue and controls, pipework condition, radiator sizing and distribution, cylinder type and venting, and any necessary safety checks. For full system replacements the engineer will also assess access, required pipe runs and whether existing radiators can be reused.

Factors that affect installation scope and cost are: property type and size, access to pipe routes, whether you need a cylinder, flue changes, required controls and any remedial works such as power flushing or radiator replacement. Always request a written quote after a site survey.
